NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -A new prescription drug for erectile dysfunction, Viagra, is expected to hit the market today.
The drug, which is sold by Pfizer, is a new drug to be developed by Eli Lilly and is being sold at a much lower cost than the older drugs.
"We've been getting calls from patients, and the reality is that Viagra is expensive to make," said Jim Sage, co-director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
"We want to make it as cheap as possible," said Sage.
The company was able to produce a new drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction by creating a new, cheaper alternative.
"We have a new drug on the market which would be cheaper than Viagra and could be the same as Viagra," Sage said.
The new drug could be available only by prescription, but Sage said the new drug will be available over the counter at the pharmacy.
Viagra, a prescription medication, is approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, a condition that occurs when a man becomes unable to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual activity.
It is not a cure for the condition. But Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis.
